MARIA SHARAPOVA WILL play at this year’s US Open after being handed a wildcard for the main draw.
The Russian, who tested positive for meldonium after the Australian Open in 2016, has not featured in a Grand Slam event since then.

Earlier this year Sharapova was publicly snubbed for a French Open wildcard and the former world number one didn’t even apply for a Wimbledon wildcard once it became clear the organising committee would follow suit.
However, the 30-year old will feature at Flushing Medows later this month with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) releasing a statement today declaring Sharapova’s wild card status.
Sharapova, who returned from her 15-month doping pan in April, won the US Open in 2006.
This year’s final Grand Slam event starts on 28 August.
